I am an INDIAN.
I read, write, and speak four languages fluently: Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, and English. Currently, I am learning German. For me, language is simply a medium for communication. Whether it’s Hindi, English, or any other language, it’s just a language.
I don’t understand why people impose languages on others. I’ve seen a few videos and their comment sections, and I fail to see why people argue just to prove that one language is superior to another. If you know and like Hindi, you can speak it. The same applies to Tamil, Malayalam, or any other language. The funniest part is that instead of showcasing the beauty of their own language, people focus on proving that another language is inferior.
I am currently residing in Delhi. Of course, I have faced differentiation. But I embrace the people and the place that embraced me as their own. I am surrounded by Hindi-speaking people, and when I first came here, I wasn’t fluent in speaking Hindi. Like many Malayalis, I was comfortable with reading and writing but struggled with speaking. However, the people around me gave me time, space, and, most importantly, patience to understand and adapt. I have seen how happy they are when I try to speak in Hindi. The same happened in Tamil Nadu, and the same happens in Kerala as well. For every state and its people, their language and culture are special. And of course, it’s always a joy to meet someone who knows the language that we speak.
When I first arrived in Delhi, I couldn’t understand Hindi well because of the differences in pronunciation and speed. The first person who took the initiative to talk to me didn’t know English, and I didn’t know Hindi. For our initial conversations, we used Google Translate. Even though it wasn’t perfect, we managed to communicate. I will always remember her with gratitude because, for me, she was the representative of a new city and its people.
I know we often focus on the minority who spread negativity, but I still believe we all have bigger hearts than this. When I see comment boxes and some so-called influencers, I can’t help but think that common sense is not a flower that blooms in every garden.
I wish people had the wisdom to see beyond this. Why do some feel the need to put down another state, people, or language just to elevate their own? If you have to degrade something else to prove yours is better, maybe take a moment to reflect on where you actually stand.
Embrace the country. Patriotism isn’t a bad thing, it’s about unity in diversity
